The Power of Losing Control
Joe Caruso, Caruso Leadership Institute

Joe Caruso was only 18 when he lost control of his life in a dramatic way. He was diagnosed with an incurable cancer. Joe decided to commit whatever short time he had left to studying life and learning what he calls the simple, common, timeless, human truths. After radical, experimental chemotherapy and four major surgeries, Joe became one of the first people cured of advanced testicular cancer.

Today, Joe teaches how, in the most devastating of circumstances, to make true transformation while finding power, peace, and meaning in the process. In his work, Joe provides clear and simple ways how others can too.

For the decades since his diagnosis, Joe has kept his commitment to studying life and in doing so has become one of the most respected authorities on human development and transformation thinking.

Joe's new book, The Power of Losing Control: Finding Strength, Meaning and Happiness in an Out of Control World, will be published by Penguin Putnam Publishers / Gotham Books in February, 2003.

This book will be provided with your IARE Conference registration and Joe Caruso will be available to personally autograph your copy after his presentation.

About the Book
The Power of Losing Control: Finding Strength, Meaning and Happiness in an Out of Control World
by Joe Caruso

It seems the more we try to control the elements in our lives, the more out of control life becomes. Joe Caruso learned this when he was only eighteen after being diagnosed with incurable testicular cancer, which at that time had a three percent survival rate. Certain that he was living on borrowed time he began to plan his own funeral until a wise nurse taught him a lesson that changed the course of his life. He embarked on a quest that led him to discover timeless truths about our spiritual and emotional existence and more than twenty years later he is now an internationally acclaimed speaker whose seminars, workshops and counsel have literally transformed people’s lives. In The Power of Losing Control, he shares his practical knowledge and insight that will help you take responsibility for your life and overcome daily battles, both large and small.

At the root of Caruso’s work is the understanding that, despite the fact that we live in a high tech world designed to organize and structure our lives down to the last detail, we live in an out-of-control world. Despite any illusions, we actually have no control over anything—except ourselves and the way we react to the events of our lives. The true power in losing control lies in the wisdom of making clear distinctions between what you can control, what you can merely affect and what you need to accept. When we stop wasting precious energy trying to make the world and other people be the way we want them to be, we can tap into that energy and focus it on ways that will give us more peace, happiness and personal satisfaction.

In his book Joe shares his timeless wisdom that includes:

  • How to find power in every situation even if you don’t have control over it
  • The Five States of Wisdom and how to make them work for you
  • Why you can’t change people’s minds but can influence a shift in their perspectives
  • Why less people like you than you think and why it isn’t important
  • You already have the antidote to fear—how to use it
  • Why we are the stories we tell ourselves we are and how rewriting our personal driving myths can reshape how we live our lives
  • How our power is inextricably linked to our willingness to let go

Written in Joe’s warm, personal style and filled with real life stories that are sure to change the way you see things, The Power of Losing Control shows you why the best way to happiness is to stop pursuing it.
