President's Message
by Kate Wolfe, President, IARE

Boots, I need to get some boots. A hat, A Stetson with a Bull Riders brim!

Round ‘em up, move ‘em out, and git along lil’ doggies.

Yes, the motif is Western, and you should indeed watch your mail for the registration information on this year’s IARE Conference. The Board has thoroughly enjoyed putting it together for you. We believe that the agenda and the topics will pique your interest and the entertainment will delight you. Myself, I’m planning to golf (for the second time in my life) as a "Designated Putter." Not too much harm in that!

The Board has also been focusing in areas other than Conference. A successful audit of our financial records was recently completed. Time has been spent in the creation of a budget plan for this year, and we have agreed upon a membership growth objective to meet the plan. The Membership Committee is pleased to report that the number of members now exceeds 140, showing excellent year-over-year growth. If you are interested in becoming a Board member, please visit our web site and complete a Board Nomination form. Even if you don’t wish to be on the board, but would like to participate more fully, we have numerous committee openings available for next year.

Don’t forget to complete the forms for nominating your candidates for the IARE Excellence Awards. Your company’s Managers, Supervisors, Support Staff and Agents are all potential winners. Prizes include cash, a trophy...  Imagine -- it could be a picture of one of your team members posted on the web site!

Warmest Regards, and see you in May!
Kate

What does IARE Conference mean for YOU?

We asked some of our Board members to give us a candid response to what IARE and the Annual Conference means to them….

"Learning from others, our members and vendors, is the major benefit that I derive from the annual IARE conference. I always leave with new ideas for enhancement as well as cost saving measures. It is a rare opportunity to discuss options with people who know exactly what you are attempting to achieve, and the associated implications."
Kate Wolfe, Director of Planning, Utell

"I have been coming to this event for the past nine years. I have listened to great speakers and found myself challenged by workshop leaders. I have had some of my very values tested. I have listened to peers give their opinions and approaches to our complex problems. I have had my management style tested and even changed. Lastly, I have gained relationships that have lasted for years in the very industry that puts food on my table."

I look forward to seeing you there!
Will Jansen, VP Reservations Services Best Western International

"The IARE gives me a place to learn from other call center professionals in the industry. I can benchmark ways we do things, get hints as to emerging technologies, and generate new ideas to help my business. At the annual conference I can 'shop' the latest and greatest in call center support and technology from a variety of vendors. And best of all, I can network with great people across the country!"
Keith Brender, Vice President Customer Communication

IARE Golf Tournament
Let's see just how good you are… The target has always been to beat Will Jansen and his team! Just ask some of the past participants of the IARE annual golf tournament. The challenge is on for all you golfers to enjoy a great course in the valley of the sun.

Wait a minute? We have something special for our non-golfers as well. Have you ever been to a miniature golf course with your kids, put a putter in your hands and sunk a 40 foot putt? Then you have qualified for the fourth position on each team. That’s right! We will have three person teams of golfers and a designated putter for each team. This gives you a chance to participate in the outing and work on many skills. There is the skill of navigating a cart through desert territory – the skill of balancing a hot dog and a cool one at the same time – the skill of lining up a putt for birdie – the skill of inter-acting with fellow IARE members – you get the picture!

IEX is a proud to sponsor this exciting event at the newest course in Scottsdale. We will have tee times starting at 8am and have slots for 30 golfers and 10 putters. There will be special prizes for the closest to the pin – longest drive and yes longest putt. At the end of the round we will have a BBQ on the patio of the clubhouse.

So don’t waste any time signing up for this great event – slots will go fast!!!

IARE 2001 Excellence Awards
Did you know that you have the opportunity to nominate employees from within your company for the IARE Excellence Award?

"Your call center may be doing well, but you're not doing it alone. Every office has its share of stand-out performers, including agents (TSRs, CSRs,...etc.), admin or clerical staff, supervisors, and managers. WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT SOME OF THEM!

Take it from someone who has had a Res Agent winner in the past, the entire workforce heard about it (We made it a big deal!), appreciated the nomination efforts, and shared in the recognition. We all benefited.

So, look around your office, identify those "special" employees, and send in your nominations for the IARE Excellence Award. Your employees deserve it, and so do you."

Kevin M. O'Neill, Director of N. A. Reservations, Best Western International, and Chair, IARE Awards Committee

The IARE Excellence Awards were created to allow us to recognize outstanding individuals who contribute to the success of the call centers in our organization and drive the success of our companies.

The four categories for the awards are: Manager of Excellence Award; Supervisor Excellence Award; Staff Excellence Award and Representative Excellence Award. The nominees in these categories will be judged on how they have exceeded expectations in their role and how they have performed in an extraordinary manner deserving of recognition.

As a special incentive to reward and recognize these outstanding individuals, this year IARE will notify Award Winners in advance and invite them to attend the Conference to accept their award in person. IARE will waive the Conference registration fee for these individuals; we ask that you plan accordingly to cover expenses for their travel and accommodations.

There is no time like the present to recognize those exceptional employees within your organization! Details and nomination forms are available on our web site at http://www.iare.com/awards.html.

Please Don't Delay…
Award Nominations must be received no later than March 15, 2001

Member Tip… Roll Out The Red Carpet!

New ideas and fresh approaches to everyday life in a call center is what we are all here for! It didn’t seem like much at the time -- we were sitting in one of the center meetings about four years ago and the discussion was on retention and motivation. A fellow manager from another call center talked about many different ideas they have tried over the past year. A light bulb went off in our head and a new tradition began!

This past week we celebrated our third year of hosting an in-office activity that celebrates the sales accomplishments of the previous year! We supply name badges for everyone with the saying "I made a difference and helped contribute" and we list the total revenue amount produced by the entire reservations staff. We decorate the sales floor with multi-colored balloons. All the Sales & Development Supervisors dress in black-and-white as waiters and work a concession area with sodas and snacks. We throw around play money on the sales floor and have a great time. There is a bulletin board up with everyone’s individual total revenue for the year with many photo snapshots. We have more than 250 sales representatives and we want them to know that everyone makes it happen!

The best part of the day is when a limousine pulls up with the red carpet rolled out and the top twelve overall performers go for a ride and out to lunch with the management staff. These twelve people in just one of our reservations office accounted for more than $35,000,000 in total revenue last year! They talk about this part for months into the future!

All of this started from just a networking session at the IARE Conference in Salt Lake City. I know this has made a difference to our operation, just imagine what the IARE Annual Conference can do for you!
