SEASON'S GREETINGS!

IN THIS ISSUE

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE     Back to top
As I reflect upon the last year, I notice that 2001 has been a year of change and uncertainty. The travel and hospitality industry has experienced major economic difficulties, many resulting in employee lay-offs, call center closings, and other significant measures.

On September 11th, we all watched with disbelief and fear the shocking pictures from New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania, and we wondered about the eventual impact this would have on our businesses.

Then, economists reported in late October what we already knew the United States was in a recession.

The bad news/good news is that time heals and recessions eventually end. In the meantime, we must look forward with optimism and learn to appreciate and savor the successes.

We must recognize and praise the courage of our colleagues and employees, past and present, who have left an indelible mark on our professional and personal lives. We must acknowledge the difficult decisions made by company leaders because we, too, have been faced with difficult situations. And above all, we must be courageous in our outlook for the future.

So, what does 2002 hold in store for IARE and the travel/hospitality industry? No one knows for sure, but here is my New Year's wish for you…

May your telephones start ringing off the hook beginning January 2.

That, as the New Year begins, so will interest in travel, both leisure and corporate.

That air travel begins its recovery and airlines continue to add flights.

And, as the airlines and Wall Street recover, so does the nation.

Best wishes to you all for a remarkable holiday and a prosperous New Year!

Kate Wolfe

2002 EXCELLENCE AWARDS    Back to top
by Mark Dickson, Chair, IARE Awards Committee

As the Planning Committee makes the final preparations for our 2002 Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, it is time to begin submitting the names of your team members who qualify for the 2002 IARE Excellence Awards.

The awards will be given in four categories

  • Manager Excellence Award -- for those who manage a department or a function at a strategic level
  • Supervisor Excellence Award -- for those who have direct responsibility for a team of employees
  • Staff Excellence Award -- for those in an administrative or support role
  • Representative Excellence Award -- for those who deal directly with the customer in a sales or service capacity

The IARE Excellence Awards are presented each year to those who have exceeded expectations in the areas of job performance, team development, customer service, and even community service. Past award winners have often been represented by the individual who always rises to the occasion when needed, placing their personal time second to the needs of the call center. However, they have also been the ones who work quietly behind the scenes to ensure a successful operation and without whom the enterprise would suffer. Past winners have been long-term industry veterans, as well as fresh-out-of-school "rookies." If a member of your team can be defined using terms like outstanding, extraordinary, selfless, dedicated and excellent example for others then they fit the mold for the 2002 IARE Excellence Awards.

Please do not delay in submitting an Awards Nomination for your deserving team members! Details and nomination forms are available on the IARE web site at:

http//www.iare.com/awards.html

A center may not submit more than one nomination within each category. Nomination forms must be received by March 29, 2002. The winners will be announced at the IARE Annual Conference, May 5-8, 2002 in Charleston, SC.
